Family Service of Roanoke Valley Brings Hope & Changes Lives!

Imagine you or your loved one arriving at an area assisted living facility without any personal possessions and receiving clothes that had been left behind by deceased patients. This is exactly what happened with one of our guardianship clients, Mr. Jones.

Mr. Jones was referred to the Family Service of Roanoke Valley Public Guardian & Conservator Program because he needed a potentially life-saving medical procedure; but because he was mentally incapacitated and had no one in his life to make this decision, the circuit court appointed FSRV to be his legal guardian. This is when Amanda, a Family Service of Roanoke Valley Guardianship Case Manager, first met Mr. Jones. Amanda was able to consent for the medical procedure and soon realized that Mr. Jones was also in dire need of clothes that fit him, and his room was stark without any personalized items. Amanda helped Mr. Jones purchase new clothes (including some Virginia Tech apparel, as he is a fan). She also helped him purchase a super important Navy blanket for his bed that signifies the branch of the military where he served, just like the other residents owned and displayed. Because of Amanda’s extraordinary care, and the FSRV Guardianship Program, Mr. Jones knows he has someone who cares about him and his needs. He enjoys every visit with Amanda and can see his future filled with hope!

The story of Mr. Jones aligns well with our organization’s updated mission statement: Family Service of Roanoke Valley supports individuals and families as they journey toward lives of emotional wellness, healthy relationships, and a future filled with hope. This is just one of the many stories from clients who see their own futures filled with hope after receiving the support they needed to complete their journeys.

Your donation to FSRV could help another resident just like Mr. Jones! What else could your gift provide?

$25 could relieve stress for a caregiver.
$50 could allow a family to seek help for a troubled child.
$100 could fund a Play Therapy session for a child who has been the victim of child abuse.
$200 could fund two counseling sessions for someone who is coping with the struggle caused by depression or anxiety.
$200 could purchase holiday gifts for eight guardianship clients.
$300 could cover the cost of a full, 10-week Healthy Relationships program for a person who uses violence in their relationships, providing them with the tools to identify and change their behavior.
$500 could help bring youth counseling to an additional community center.
$1000 could provide “wrap-around services” for a family; this means that the family receives support from a team of professionals focused on the family’s needs, ideas and perspectives.

Thank you for helping to make a difference right here in the Roanoke Valley!
